What Your Favorite Genre Says About You

favorite genre

We all have that one genre we gravitate toward — the section of the library we make a beeline for, the filter we use when browsing, the type of book we buy at airport bookstores even though we have seventeen unread books at home. But have you ever stopped to wonder what your go-to genre says about you? We have.

Romance

You are a certified optimist with a big heart, strong opinions about fictional couples, and an impressive ability to cry at commercials. You believe in people, in second chances, and in the idea that love — messy and imperfect as it is — is always worth it. You’re also probably the most fun person at any party.

Your next read: Pick up Beach Read by Emily Henry — a witty, warm romance that even non-romance readers tend to love. Find it in our catalog at bathcplky.booksys.net.

Thriller

You are always the first person to figure out the plot twist, and you’re not afraid to tell everyone about it. You lock your doors, trust your gut, and have definitely mapped out an escape route from at least one room you’ve been in. You’re sharp, intuitive, and probably great in a crisis.

Your next read: Try The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn — a twisty, edge-of-your-seat ride you won’t see coming. Find it in our catalog at bathcplky.booksys.net.

Fantasy

You have an incredible imagination, a deep sense of justice, and a part of you that has never fully accepted that Hogwarts letters aren’t real. You see the world not just as it is, but as it could be — and that’s a genuinely rare and wonderful thing.

Your next read: If you haven’t picked up The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss yet, now’s the time. Find it in our catalog at bathcplky.booksys.net.

Mystery

You are detail-oriented, patient, and deeply skeptical of everyone’s alibi. You read menus like they’re evidence and you notice things other people miss. Your friends probably consult you when they can’t find their keys. You’re basically a detective who just hasn’t gotten their license yet.

Your next read: The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman is witty, clever, and endlessly satisfying. Find it in our catalog at bathcplky.booksys.net.

Science Fiction

You think in systems, ask “but why though?” about everything, and have probably had at least one conversation about whether we’re living in a simulation. You’re a visionary — someone who sees where things are headed before everyone else catches up. Also, you were right about that thing you predicted five years ago, and you’d like credit.

Your next read: Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir is the sci-fi book even non-sci-fi readers can’t put down. Find it in our catalog at bathcplky.booksys.net.

Nonfiction

You are endlessly curious, a little competitive at trivia nights, and the person in the friend group who sends articles with the note “this made me think of you.” You want to understand how things work, why people do what they do, and what’s actually true. You’re also probably right more often than people give you credit for.

Your next read: Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell will make you rethink every interaction you’ve ever had. Find it in our catalog at bathcplky.booksys.net.

Historical Fiction

You’re an old soul with a deep appreciation for context and a suspicion that people in the past were a lot more interesting than history class let on. You’re thoughtful, empathetic, and you’ve definitely Googled “what was daily life like in [random era]” at least once this month.

Your next read: The Alice Network by Kate Quinn is gripping, emotional, and brilliantly researched. Find it in our catalog at bathcplky.booksys.net.

Horror

You are braver than you look. You’ve made peace with the darker side of the human imagination — and honestly? That takes guts. You’re probably also the calmest person in an actual emergency, because nothing is scarier than what you’ve already read.

Your next read: If you haven’t tried Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, prepare to sleep with the lights on. Find it in our catalog at bathcplky.booksys.net.
